RESUME

Sally Breen has long taken her inspiration from the beauty of the ocean. Living in Water Mill, NY, the artist draws on the continual change of light and the reflection from the water surrounding her.  Ms. Breen’s lyrical, contemporary paintings capture the very essence of light and water and are transformative for both the artist and viewer.  The artist is able to capture the enormity of the sky and the expanse of the ocean on canvas, while conveying the moods of the moment.  Her paintings are a powerful metaphor for all that is beautiful, changing and hard to contain in life.

Gatherings have become a new source of inspiration for Ms. Breen’s work.  The vitality of the groups enlivens these scenes and brings the energy of the moment to the canvas.  Two of her new works, “Bonfire, After the S’mores” and “Beach Scene, August at the Cut” incorporate this new theme.  Both paintings, as well as a water image, “Warm Morning”, were selected to bring a little East to the West at “East-Meets-West Exhibition” at New Century Artists Gallery in Chelsea, April 22 – May 1, 2010.

Ms. Breen’s contemporary style is informed by her intuitive and reflective approach to the subject, yet Ms. Breen has a very solid classical training in the arts.  She received her BFA from Syracuse University and took post-graduate classes at the New York Academy of Art.  She also has studied at as varied institutions as the Corcoran, the Torpedo Factory, SUNY Purchase and NYU.

Her work has recently been shown on the East End at the Water Mill Museum and Ashawagh Hall.  She is a member of the Crazy Monkey Gallery artist cooperative in Amagansett thecrazymonkeygallery.com and the Hampton Road Artist Collective, Southampton - hamptonroadgallery.com.  Her work has been shown at Town Hall, The Gallery Sag Harbor, Paul Gingras Gallery, the Southampton Cultural Center, Prudential and UBS.

Ms. Breen also has an artistic entrepreneurial spirit that led her to found The Local Art Rag, the East End’s Guide to local artists and musicians, now in its third year with her partner Daniel Schoenheimer, Her varied career includes computer graphics, print making, gouache painting; and even one-of-a-kind silk-screened tee shirts sold at Thompson Square Park back in the day.  Ms. Breen also served as a gallerist at a Sag Harbor gallery, an experience that convinced her she preferred the life of an artist.
